Spain- Chick Corea’s solo- guitar cover
Sunday, February 1st, 2009
Me playing my own transciption of Chick Corea’s solo on “Spain” on my new gibson custom 335. I think it’s a great solo, and a great study in jazz phrasing.

“Nola” was composed as a ragtime piano piece in 1915 by Felix Arndt. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amMz6AAKE4Q for a version of Liberace performing the piece on piano in 1969.
The arrangement I recorded here, though, is the one by Les Paul — see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzf7Ux9Q6iQ for the classic 1950s recording. Les Paul recorded the high-pitched lead guitar part by speeding up and slowing down the tape, so I used the same effect here. The lead guitar was recorded at half time and sped up 200% to give it that classic Les Paul sound. (The other guitar tracks were recorded in real-tempo, with no speeding.)
NOTE: For some reason the lead guitar video freezes toward the end of the clip. I believe this is due to a bug in Final Cut Express — couldn’t figure out why it was happening.

So as soon as I got the Les Paul I had to go over all cliched and do an improvised redition of Eric Clapton’s ‘Hideaway’ from the John Mayall Bluesbreakers ‘Beano’ Album;
The first recording of a Gibson Les Paul and Marshall amp together…
I wonder if Eric knew he was creating history?
Well I don’t have a spare £300,000 to buy and original 1959 Les Paul Standard or an original Marshall JTM 45 for that matter so here goes with my 2005 Les Paul Standard and 2007 VOX AC30 CC2, overdrive as always on my videos is courtesy of my beloved Rat pedal.
I hope you enjoy. As always any comments would be much appreciated.

Featuring Leigh Jackson from New Zealand playing the Jazz standard “All the Things you Are”on a 335 Gibson from the seventies. This guitar has a very warm sound and is great for jazz. This song features a technique where bass lines and chords are played together giving the impression of 2 instruments.
Enjoy

Playing the slide guitar blues my Gibson 60s RI Flying V, that I owned for almost fifteen years since I started to play the guitar. It’s been a work horse and it has a lot of scratches but it still feels good.
