    The preamp makes …
The preamp makes the sound, the poweramp makes the volume.
By adding a poweramp you just get more punch and power, to bring the sound of the preamp to earbleeding level.
The ENGL e530 is just a separate preamp (with lots of options). I have a poweramp(Peavey60/60) which I use to bring the ENGL to live level (LOUD).
For recording I use a programm(Revalver MKII/MKIII which emulates a cabinet sound. Sometimes I use just a Reverb to get a lively guitar sound(PC).
