Which is better, a Gibson Les Paul Junior or a Flying V?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

My brother wants to get a new guitar and, after narrowing it down to these two, can’t decide. I’ve seen them both. Please include the pros and cons of your choice.

Les Paul Junior

Pros: -One volume and tone knob so you don’t have to go in-depth in trying to find your sound (unless he’s a tone-junkie)
- Very light in weight compared to a Les Paul.
- One P-90 pickup (crunchy, rock/blues tone)
- Cheap, compared to a Les Paul
- Comfortable to hold

Cons: – One P-90 pickup (it depends on your brother.. He might like more tone)
——————————-

Flying V

Pros: – Cool body design
- Great sound (Humbuckers, A.K.A two "rock" pickups)
- Easy access to the entire neck

Cons: – Somewhat of an uncomfortable body design (Especially if sitting down)
- Costs more (I think) than a Junior

That’s what I think of ‘em anyways..

Should I buy this used Gibson Flying V from GC?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

I can play a lot of Metalica, I’m good at guitar. I already have an Epi Les Paul standard and a KH-202. The Faded V is $499, its used at Guitar Center. The strings aren’t brand new (expected), but the fretboard on the neck looks sorta worn out. Well not worn out, maybe a little dirty. If I cleaned it would it clear up? I just don’t know about this guitar. I played it twice, but it was a V so I couldn’t get the full feel without standing up, (it didn’t have a strap.) Can anyone give me some insight, thanks.

I would recommend playing it standing up and being comfortable but since you played it already and didn’t find anything immediately wrong with it, I’d say go for it. If the neck was tweaked or the frets were sharp or it had shorts, etc, you would have discovered it already.

The neck will clean up easy, especially if you plan on doing a string change on it anyway.

Go buy the damned thing.

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

i’m getting a Gibson Flying V in a few days and i wanted to know if there was a certain genre(s) tht the v is good for playing.

everything, great blues guitarists (one thats really worth note, but his name escapes me) have used them, Jimi hendrix did for his bluesy psyche-rock
and a multitude of metal guitarists use them,

Do you think Gibson flying Vs are cool?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I’m looking to get a really nice cheap flying v I found locally but some peole say they look weird. What do you think? Should I get it?

I’m a tenage girl btw so take that in note when you answer. I don’t know if you have opinions of if they look ok for some people or not. It’s a cherry red 67′ reissue. i prefer strats and think they look nicer but this is a really good price and has some nice features so…

Flying V’s look cool. The only downside is they are difficult to play if you are sitting down.

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Right im getting a new guitar i play nothing but metal hah! So i’m lloknig for the perfect metal guitar its mainly out of these two but llet me know of any other awesome metal guitars and i will take it on board! + would the Gibson need a lot of modding for example, new pickups like emg’s?

Gibson Explorer or V. Like the first poster said, get a good amp. Marshall, Randall, Krank, etc.

Gibson/Epiphone SG vs Gibson/Epi Flying V?

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

I am looking at a new guitar. I saw a used Gibson SG at a reasonable price, but is a brand new Epiphone SG better off getting than the used Gibson. I am also looking at a flying V, but it would most likely be Epiphone. I currently have an Epiphone Zakk Wylde les Paul w/ EMG’s. Any other suggestions. Also looking at a new amp for rock/metal. Any suggestions?

I’ve always preferred the flying v over the sg just because I find it easier to play the highest frets. I would go with a Gibson Flying V, they’re pretty reasonably priced if you want a used one (doesn’t bother me). I can’t speak for the Epiphone V’s though, I’ve never played one. Amp wise look at Krank or Randall. Line 6 has got a tube amp now and its pretty cool as well (about 800-900 dollars for the head)

Epiphone Flying V vs. Gibson SG Special?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I’ve been thinking about what guitar i should get for christmas, and i narrowed it down to either one of those two. They both have their advantages, but i’m really torn between them both.
Which should i get?

I don’t like Flying V’s, even when they are Gibsons. That’s just my taste of course. People who play them swear by them. Now, as far as the ANY Epiphone vs a Gibson SG, there is no comparision. An SG is one of the finest guitars ever made. Has the sound and feel of a Les Paul, but it’s lighter and I think it just "fits" better when you play it. I love the thin body and the neck. And the sound is still that classic Gibson sound. I’m not saying that Epiphones are garbage. They are a nice option for a good guitar at a lower price. They share many Gibson design elements and electronics. But they are not Gibsons. And even amongst Gibsons, there is little that really compares with a nice SG.

Is a brand new Epiphone Flying V guitar better than a used Gibson flying V?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Also, the used Gibson flying V is Gibson’s cheapest flying V. It’s not the real expensive Gibson flying V.
I’m going to be using the guitar through a Marshall MG 100 watt amp.

yes it is.

Is it possible to get a faded Gibson V in black?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Whenever I look at photo galleries for guitar sites the faded always has a pic of it in black, even if I know it’s always in faded cherry. Is there really a way to get a black Flying V w/o paying $200 more or am I just in a purple haze?

This is an example:

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Faded-Flying-V-?sku=517336#used

No. All the faded stuff that Gibson makes is either Cherry or "Brown" (or whatever its called). That pic looks cherry colored to me, so maybe you have a monitor issue? However, the good thing is it’s EASY to re-do the finish on a faded Gibson because you dont have to get any Nitro-Cellulose off (or back on). So just strip it down and have a good carpenter sand off the stain, restain it in black, and out a real super thin urethane non-gloss sealer on it.

What is the Gibson Flying V Guitar made of?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

what is it made of nowadays?

Mahogany body and rosewood neck, probably. Give me a serial number and I’ll tell you exactly. Does it have a flame top ? If so, that’s a maple veneer affixed on top of the mahogany body.
