It’s not possible to say which guitar is better.
Buying a guitar is a personal thing. It has to feel right for the person who will play it.It has to play easy for the person who will play it.It has to have the sound that the player looks for in a guitar.

You can talk about differences in pick-ups, bridges, electronics and so on.That’s fine to do.But I think a player has to test guitars personally before buying one.

You’re just not going to find a cheap Gibson, sorry. There are plenty great guitars that are cheaper than Gibson though. They are very expensive. You could get a Gibson Faded SG new for $699. I bought a used one for $400 a few months ago. You can get the Faded Flying V for $949. American guitars don’t really depreciate much, if any, so buying used will only save you so much.

I am a developing guitarist and for my 16th birthday I’m thinking of getting a new electric guitar.my parents give me money every year but the problem is i cant decide between a Epiphone explorer or a Gibson flying v. I’m having a summer job as well so i know i can pay for a flying v by myself . i cant decide(PERSONALLY, I’M THINKING OF JUST BUYING BOTH) What do you guys think?
1.I have a summer job to pay for one or both
2.when i said "when my parents give me money every year", i meant for my birthday

I have an Epiphone Explorer, and two Gibson Explorers. Though I don’t have a Gibson ‘V, I do have an Epiphone V.

So . . .

Epiphone makes a great guitar but – despite what anyone says – you do get more from getting a real Gibson. Gibson uses a better finish process on their instraments that lets the wood breath and age better, and the Gibson’s pickups are much hotter.

Though I love the Explorer’s shape, my Epi ‘V is more comfortable for me to play and I always seem to find myself reaching for it over its brothers.

So, between your two choices I’d personaly take . . . wait for it . . . . wait for it . . . . Neither.

The current Gibson V’s are not as cool as the older ones that had the strings through the body (my opinion) and, unless you plan on doing a lot of custom work to the Epi, you may not be happy with its sound. As the other guy said, go play a lot of guitars. Jacksons, Ibanez, the whole freak’n lot. Find one you dig and get it.

I’m looking to buy my third guitar. Recently, I have mostly looked at gibsons, as well as ibanezs, prs, and scheter. im wondering, out of my guitar wishlist is the best for me, statistic wise, er i mean like hypothetically. (ie. if i am a rock guitarist, say the best rock guitar out of them). I mostly play rock music, but I like to play other things as well. Some bands i like to cover are ACDC, Guns n Roses, and Black Stone Cherry. Right now I am leaning to the gibson les paul custom because it is very versatile because it has a great clean tone, but has a good distortion when you need it. Anyway, pick the guitar that is versatile!

P.S. Price is not an issue. I’m saving, so if its worth it, I can wait.

Impressive wish list! You can’t go wrong with a Les Paul. They are great guitars (a bit heavy though). But they sound awesome. I love Ibanez guitars and I own 2 of the S series instruments. I would recommend them to anyone interested in a top notch guitar. I also own a very old custom ESP Les Paul reproduction that is an absolutely perfect version of the classic ‘58 Paul. ESP makes great guitars. I have owned a Gibson explorer, It was nice but not fantastic. PRS makes excellent guitars but I would get the Les Paul over the PRS Tremonti. Schecter started out making guitar parts and while they do make nice guitars I feel that they are still a second class instrument when compared to a Gibson or a top of the line PRS or Ibanez.
Bottom line: I would go with one of the Les Pauls or the Ibanez, but that is a personel taste thing.
Good luck.

i am looking to play songs from bands such as iron maiden, metallica, and some new bands who play slightly more punk riffs, such as rise against and rage against the machiine. the guitars ive been looking at are squier telecaster, lado earth, ibanez destoryer or Gibson explorer or SG. which guitar should i get ? i was thinking mainly the SG or telecaster but would rather an experts opinion!
thanks for all comments

its not really what kind of guitar you have, its more what kind of pickups you have in your guitar. So if i was you, i would either go with the Gibson Explorer or the SG, because they usually have humbuckers in them, which is a pickup that creats a heavy, crunchy kind of noise. Telicasters tend to be a little twangier but they can still be rock machines if you know how to use them. Me personally, i have a hamer with demarizio super destortion pickups in it and it rocks harder then my old mans SG

In all honesty they’re pretty similar for the sound you want. They both have decent, easy necks and have good humbuckers. As the guy above said, cheap model Mockingbirds are crap where as you’re fairly sure to get a good Explorer no matter what. Personally I’m a BC Rich fan and would love a Mockingbird so if it was me I’d have that, just as long as it was an NJ model or something. Bronze series BC Rich’s are horrid

Right now I have a Fender Stratocaster a good guitar for rookies but not for intermediate players like me, is there any real difference between the sound quality between a newbie guitar to a classic awesome rock one like for say a les paul? I will award 10 points to someone who can answer these two questions.

Yes, there is a huge difference in tone and quality of the guitar. Check out Craigslist and your local guitar shops for used guitars, you probably won’t find a Gibson that cheap but maybe an Epiphone

I was thinking of changing the pickups of my Gibson Explorer because the original 496R and 500T are getting pretty old and I think they are failing somewhat. What is a good recommendation for new pickups for this guitar? I play mostly rock, metal, blues and jazz and I have a budget of about US$120 per pickup…
Other miscellaneous questions. It’s just, I bought this guitar used and I want to know what year it was made. How do I find out? How long is a good time to change the pickups and overall internal circuitry of a guitar (potentiometers, wiring, etc)?
If you don’t know the answer to the second questions, please just give the advice on the pickups ^_^

Consider Semor Duncan SH8 (or sh6) for a nice rock tone. I also like the tone produced by all Bare Knuckle pickups i’ve tried (i don’t know model names though, sorry!), but they may be at the edge of your price range really.

As to the finding out when it was made i know that fender have a chart on their website for their guitars where you can look at the serial number and find out the year, perhaps gibson have one too.
You could also try this site: http://www.guitardaterproject.org/gibson.aspx

The third question i’m not sure about – i know that vintage guitars with replaced electronics actualy go down in value. So long as the guitar is in good condtion i personally would never change the wiring, and only change the pickups if they were broken or i wanted a different tone.

Thanks

Hello there,

On their web site, Gibson has a page about how to tell the date of a Gibson by the serial number.

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/SerialNumberSearch/

Later,
